Background of the Study

Deforestation is a critical environmental issue that significantly alters ecosystems and can have far-reaching impacts on public health. In Sokoto State, rapid deforestation—driven by agricultural expansion, urbanization, and logging—has disrupted natural habitats and altered the distribution of disease vectors such as mosquitoes and ticks. Changes in land use may increase human exposure to vectors, thereby elevating the risk of vector-borne diseases such as malaria, dengue fever, and Lyme disease (Aliyu, 2023; Mustapha, 2024). The loss of tree cover also affects local microclimates, potentially creating conditions more favorable for vector breeding. Although various studies have linked deforestation to increased disease transmission in other regions, the specific impacts in Sokoto State remain underexplored. This study will investigate the relationship between deforestation and the prevalence of vector-borne diseases, utilizing satellite imagery to assess land cover changes alongside epidemiological data from local health facilities.

Statement of the Problem

In Sokoto State, ongoing deforestation has raised significant concerns regarding its impact on public health, particularly in relation to vector-borne diseases. The destruction of natural habitats has not only led to environmental degradation but has also disrupted the ecological balance, facilitating the spread of disease vectors into human settlements. As communities expand into deforested areas, their exposure to vectors increases, potentially leading to higher incidences of malaria and other vector-borne illnesses. Despite these concerns, there is limited empirical data that quantifies the link between deforestation and disease prevalence in the region. The lack of targeted interventions to address the health impacts of environmental change exacerbates public health challenges in Sokoto State. This study seeks to fill this gap by assessing the extent of deforestation, evaluating its impact on vector populations, and correlating these changes with disease incidence rates, thereby informing sustainable public health and environmental policies.

Objectives of the Study

1. To quantify deforestation trends in Sokoto State using remote sensing data.

2. To assess the relationship between deforestation and the prevalence of vector-borne diseases.

3. To recommend integrated strategies for environmental conservation and disease control.

Research Questions

1. What is the extent of deforestation in Sokoto State over the past decade?

2. How does deforestation correlate with the incidence of vector-borne diseases?

3. What interventions can mitigate the public health impacts of deforestation?

Research Hypotheses

1. Increased deforestation is significantly associated with higher rates of vector-borne diseases.

2. Areas with extensive tree cover loss exhibit greater vector densities.

3. Integrated environmental and public health interventions will reduce disease incidence.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on deforestation hotspots in Sokoto State and corresponding health data from local clinics. Data will be obtained from satellite imagery, field surveys, and health records. Limitations include potential inaccuracies in remote sensing data and confounding factors affecting disease transmission.

Definitions of Terms

• Deforestation: The permanent removal of trees and forest cover from an area.

• Vector-Borne Diseases: Illnesses transmitted by vectors such as mosquitoes, ticks, and flies.

• Remote Sensing: The acquisition of information about an area through satellite or aerial imagery.
